Am I the Only One Getting Nervous About 3rd Base?

pedro-felizI am well aware that Pedro Feliz didn’t really show up in the postseason offensively, and that he went through prolonged slumps. But his glovework never faltered, and he often made the spectacular look routine. In addition, he hit .262 (including .336 with RISP), which is more than acceptable for a defensive stopper batting in the 7 hole. Nonetheless, the Phils decided not to pick up his $5.5 million option. As someone who watched a lot of Wes Helms at third base, I really hope that the Phils aren’t going to let him go and then not get someone extremely productive at 3rd. Needless to say, I’d take Chone Figgins in a heartbeat, but the other guys in the mix have me a little nervous. Adrian Beltre is good defensively and has a bit more pop than Pedro, but is coming off an injury to the family jewels. Mark DeRosa would be a dream utility man for this team, as he can play every position but catcher on the infield, but I’m not sure if the Phils should send the 34 year old out every day to the hot corner. There is also talk of the Phils taking Miguel Tejada and moving him to third. I have no interest in having 3rd base at CBP be an experiment for 2010. Crashburn Alley does a rather intensive statistical look at potential third basemen for the Phils in 2010. The verdict: Do whatever it takes to get Figgins.
