Nova Crushes Penn, Dominating the Big 5

The beauty of the Big 5 has always been that every once in a while the ball takes a few funny bounces and an unheralded Philly school knocks off a much stronger program. But it looks like Villanova has simply taken their program to a place where even when the ball bounces funny, none of the other Big 5 schools can compete. The Wildcats have won 19 of their last 20 Big 5 games, including a 103-65 shellacking of Penn last night. St. Joe’s is the only team in the Big 5 that can even compete with Nova, as they defeated them in February 2008 and lost by a mere three points last season. In fact, since a one point Nova loss to Temple in 2005, the only Big 5 school other than St. Joe’s to lose by less than 10 to Nova was Temple, who lost by 8 in 2007. Penn has lost their last three to the Wildcats by a total of 82 points. Are we approaching a day when Drexel should fill in for Nova in the Big 5, just to make things fair, and allow Nova to play more important non-conference games?
