Keith Primeau on Concussions

Keith PrimeauIf the number of comments on this site is any indication of readers’ interest levels, then the prospect of Allen Iverson returning to the Sixers is far more intriguing than the issue of countless brain damaged ex-athletes running around. So just to bore you all a little more with this petulant story line, Sam Donnellon ran a piece in today’s Daily News about Keith Primeau’s life after at least 6 concussions.

Among other things included, the story mentions some corporate shill name Ira Casson. He heads the NFL’s commission on brain injury and spends his time downplaying facts like ex-NFL players over 50 having over 5 times the national average of “dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or other memory-related disease.” Or that the occurrence of these ailments in players between the ages of 30 and 49 is 19 times the national average.

Of course, these kinds of people enrage Primeau, who doesn’t consider himself to be a crusader just someone who knows the importance of having a healthy brain. The casual attitude that minimizes the focus on the issue of head trauma in sports is what Primeau would like to see eliminated. As for what can be done overall, who knows. But at least one ex-Flyer seems ready to admit that this burgeoning issue is real and that it shouldn’t be ignored.
