Lots of Big Five News

APTOPIX Villanova Temple BasketballFirst of all, congrats to the Temple Owls hoops squad. They shocked Villanova yesterday and served notice that the Owls are maybe even better in the post Dionte Christmas era.

Not all is doom and gloom on Nova’s campus, however. Division I-AA (now known as FCS) football has something called a “playoff”, and while such a ludicrous, far fetched idea as having games decided on the field may strike you BCS fans as odd, the FCS is somehow able to make it work. Due to this radical system, Villanova has advanced to the title game and will take on Montana on Friday night in Chattanooga

Interesting that while Nova’s football team heads off to do the Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Glen Miller is fired as Coach of Penn. Miller took over for Dunphy when Fran left for Temple and proceeded to run the program directly into the ground. The team is o-7 this year. Miller went 22-9 in his first year as coach, but was 23-43 since.

Segways? Who needs segways? Back to football. Temple will face UCLA in the historic Eaglebank Bowl, known as the “Grandaddy of Them All.” This is the first time Temple has played in a bowl game since 1979, when they beat Cal in the Garden State Bowl, known as “The Grandaddy of them All.” The LA Times actually has a really good piece on everything you need to know about the history of Temple football

Not everything is coming up roses for the Big Five, however. St. Joe’s hoops squad has lost 6 in a row.

LaSalle didn’t get humiliated by #1 Kansas, but they didn’t exactly play them close either. Still, the Explorers are an impressive 6-3, with two of their losses coming to the #1 and #3 teams in the country.
