Philadelphia Sports - More than Just Booing

The WIP Watch

Desean Jackson

We’re introducing a new category here at iSportacus: the WIP Watch. This segment will be devoted to the loyal fans of Philadelphia sports who call in to the radio station and say things that only a homer could say. Installment #1 was inspired by a call I just heard where the caller said that last night’s game made him certain of three things.

One, that Andy Reid is the coach of the year.

Two, that the Eagles will win the Super Bowl.

And three, that there is no player in the NFL that the caller would rather have than Desean Jackson.

Sometimes I just want to put the thoughts I hear on WIP onto paper and look at them for a few minutes, trying to figure out how many levels of irrationality go through the mind of a sports fan. Is there any other realm of human activity where people rely solely on their own assumptions and desires for their sense of reality with absolutely no regard for what anyone else is trying to accomplish?

What makes it fun is that if the Eagles lose this week, the EXACT SAME PEOPLE will call in next Monday to say that Andy needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY and that DeSean Jackson doesn’t come up big in big games.

What’s great about the caller I mentioned is his display of what psychologists might call a manic phase. First of all, with what’s going on in New Orleans and Indianapolis, there is no way that Andy Reid will win coach of the year. No way. Secondly, the Eagles certainly can win the Super Bowl but to say they’re a lock is not only illogical from a logical perspective but dismissive of a handful of teams that are more accomplished and probably better. And the thing about Desean Jackson. Sure, he’s a terrific player but I guarantee that if you go anywhere outside the Delaware Valley and asked the question “which one player would you most like to have?” that less than 1% would respond with DJ. Seriously, you’d rather have Jackson than Chris Johnson? Rather than Peyton Manning? C’mooooooon, maaan!
