That’s a Good One

We found a great headline on nhl.com today: “Leighton’s Arrival a Season Saver for the Flyers.” The guys writing for the League have a pretty good sense of humor. Despite the fact Leighton has gone 4-0-1 with a 2.03 GAA, the Flyers are far from having their season saved. In fact, coming off a game in which he allowed 2 goals on 7 shots (to add to Brian Boucher’s 5 goals allowed on 26 shots), talking about the season being saved after losing 7-4 to Ottawa is either bad timing or good irony.
Come to think of it, the biggest disgrace in yesterday’s game is having allowed 4 goals to Alexei Kovalev. Kovalev is one of those guys blessed with endless talent while possessing a questionable interest in hockey. So his m.o. isn’t much different from about 50% of the Russian players in the League. He’s the kind of guy who when he scores 4 goals against you, you either feel snakebitten or you wonder whether your defensemen had their skates sharpened before the game.
The nhl.com guys know more than me about hockey so I guess I’ll take their word that the Flyers season is no longer in peril. Though looking at their comfortable position in 12th-place in the East makes me wonder.
